The Ioniq Blue hybrid recently received a 58 mpg combined rating from the EPA, unseating the Toyota Prius Eco as the highest rated non-plug-in vehicle.
To get extra fuel efficiency, Hyundai created a special wheel and tire package for the Ioniq Blue, along with other small tweaks, to gain additional miles-per-gallon compared to the standard Ioniq hybrid, achieving EPA ratings of 57 mpg city and 59 mpg highway.
Such excellent efficiency is a result of the engineering ingenuity that’s been applied to a naturally aspirated 1.6-liter four cylinder engine. Thanks to a water-cooled exhaust-gas-recirculation system, the Ioniq Blue is able to gain three percent fuel economy by lessening the pumping losses in the engine. With its sleek shape, active front grille air shutter and air curtains that guide air away from the front fascia and around the tires, the Ioniq features a low 0.24 coefficient drag.
